Styling Your Maxi Skirts and Dresses - Shoe Edition

It’s maxi skirt season again! Whether your choice is a skirt or a dress, it can often be tricky to find a pair of shoes to complement your favourite pieces. Depending on the length of your hemline, the style of the dress and the formality of the occasion, you’ll have a few different shoe styles to choose from. Don’t worry, we’ve laid it all out for you below.

Ankle Boots

A pair of ankle boots are perfect for transitioning into and out of winter (ie, spring and autumn). This will give you a slightly bohemian or edgy look, depending on the dress and the boot of your choice, so do keep that in mind. It’s perfect for throwing a fun spin on an otherwise casual look.

Combat Boots

Combat boots technically fit into the above category but we’ve decided to separate the two as we feel they create a distinctive look. Maxi skirts and dresses are often very feminine pieces of clothing and pairing them with combat boots creates an interesting juxtaposition that mixes feminine and masculine elements.

Barely-There Sandals (flat or heeled)

Most maxi skirts contain some level of volume around the ankles. You’ll often find that counterbalancing that with a barely-there strappy sandal (in the heel height of your choice) is often very flattering.

Sneakers

All women will agree that sneakers are the ultimate go-to for anything and everything, but especially so with maxi dresses. These types of dresses are intrinsically feminine and flirty and a sneaker is a great way to balance out the softness of the look AND make it all the more comfortable

Platform Heels

Platform heels are a great way to add a few extra inches to your frame, stay comfortable, and look put-together for formal events. For a more wintry look, opt for a suede or velvet finish to add a touch of warmth.

Wedge Heels

Wedge heels are a classic summer favourite. Opt for an espadrille-heeled wedge sandal in a neutral shade for a flirty, beach-inspired date night look.

Anything With A Statement Toe

Sometimes the hemline on your dress will be designed to sit a little longer. In that case, you won’t be able to see much of the shoe itself but will be able to glimpse it from under the dress as you walk. In that case, go for something with a bolder toe - could be a bold shape, peep-toe or bright colour.
